Q: Is there any assembly required?
A: No – your Heirloom Hourglass comes to you fully assembled and ready to be filled with sand you collect. You can easily open and close your Heirloom Hourglass from either end anytime you wish. This means Heirloom Hourglass can be opened, filled or emptied, and sealed at anytime.
Q: What size are your hourglasses?
A: Hourglasses from our “Wedding & Special Event” Collection are approximately 9 5/8” tall and 6” around. Hourglasses from our “Sand Collector & Travel Souvenir” Collection are 6 1/2” tall and 3 5/8” around.
Q: How long will the sand run for?
A: The runtime for each Standard Hourglass and Sand Collector Hourglass is completely unique to you, and this is one of the best things about Heirloom Hourglass – just like our customers and your unique “Once In A Lifetime” moments, no two are exactly alike. You can fill Heirloom Hourglass with sands from nearly any location in the world. Things like the size and shape of the sand grains, the moisture content, and the amount you put in your Heirloom Hourglass will all affect the runtime.
Q: I don't really like the standard closures on a certain hourglass I like - Can I change them? I’d like to have my hourglass come with a gold ship wheel on one side and a gold anchor on the other…can I do that?
A: Yes. All Heirloom Hourglasses come standard with the closure or closures that are mentioned in the individual product descriptions for the price shown. Our Wedding & Special Event Collection Hourglasses can be filled from both sides, and all come standard with two closures so you can open, fill, and reseal your Heirloom Hourglass from either side. If you would like to replace one or both of those standard closures with your choice of custom closures, just go to the Personalization & Custom Closures section of Shop Online and add the closures you want to your shopping cart. If you add one closure to your cart, it will replace one of the standard closures. Please specify which closure you would liek to replace in the case that the hourglass comes with a different closure design on each side, such as The Wedding Day in White. If you do not specify, the hourglass will come with the closure shown in the image in the shopping section and the 1 custom closure. If you want to replace the other standard closure, just add another custom closure to your cart. We offer birthstone ship wheels, hearts, anchors, and more all in your choice of solid pewter or 24 carat gold plated solid pewter. For instance, if you purchase The Aegean model hourglass, it comes standard with two solid pewter anchor closures as listed in the product description for $119.99. If you add a gold ship wheel and a gold anchor to your cart, your Aegean will arrive with a gold ship wheel on one side, and a gold anchor on the other. The price will be $119.99, plus the prices listed for the custom closures. You can replace one or both of the standard closures on any Heirloom Hourglass model to really personalize your hourglass to suit the occasion or gift giving purpose. Please note - the hourglass will come with 2 closures total. When you order a custom closure, it replaces a standard closure. The hourglass will not come with the 2 standard closures and the custom closures when custom closures are purchased. You can also replace standard closures with custom closures on our Sand Collector & Travel Souvenir Hourglass collection. These smaller sized hourglasses are only fillable from one side, so there is only one closure. You can replace the closure that comes standard with custom closures that are found in this section with the hourglasses. For instance, if you add The Lighthouse model hourglass to your cart, it comes standard with a pewter anchor closure. If you want it to come with a gold anchor, just add the gold anchor to your cart. The price will be the cost of the hourglass, plus the cost of the custom closure. All Sand Collector size hourglasses and their custom closures can be found in the Sand Collector & Travel Souvenir Hourglass collection pages under Shop Online.
Q: My fiancé and I want to incorporate our children into our Wedding Ceremony….do you offer a way to do that?
A: Yes, please visit the Wedding Unity Sand Ceremony Items page for family package information. Use the conversion chart above to determine the amount of sand you’d like each participant in the ceremony to fill your Heirloom Hourglass with. For example, if the Bride and Groom would like their Mothers to pour in sand as well, all four people should each have about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of sand in their sand holder ready to pour in your Heirloom Hourglass during the ceremony. Here’s another example – if the Bride and Groom have a child that will be participating in the ceremony, prefill the sand holders each with 1/3 to 1/2 cup of sand.
Q: My spouse and I are renewing our vows – do you offer a Vow Renewal Ceremony?
A: Yes, Heirloom Hourglass is very popular for use in Vow Renewals. Please check out the various ceremony options, or contact us if you’d like us to help you create your own custom ceremony!
Q: I love the ceremonies offered on your website, but I’d like to have it changed a little to suit my style – is that possible?
A: Yes, send us your wedding ceremony, vow renewal ceremony, or any ceremony the way you want it written, and we’ll prepare a custom ceremony for you at no extra charge. We prepare ceremonies that people write themselves all the time. You can still select from your choice of ceremony papers, and our expert calligraphers hand letter your names as you’d like them to appear. The package prices stay the same.
Q: Do I have to ship the hourglass back to you after the ceremony for you to seal it and then ship it back to me?
A: No, there is no need to ship the hourglass back to us to seal it. You fill the hourglass and then seal it with the closures. We designed it this way so you can seal it yourself and turn it over to let the sand start flowing and combine during the ceremony. This also eliminates the added costs and risk in shipping it back to us and then us shipping it a second time back to you. Heirloom Hourglass makes it possible for you to Bring Your Once in a Lifetime home and place this special keepsake from your wedding or special occasion in your home right away.
Q: If my Heirloom Hourglass ever gets broken, can you help?
A: Yes, we offer complete repair and replacement services if your hourglass ever gets broken. Accidents and unforeseeable events happen all the time, and we’re here to help! Heirloom Hourglass is designed and built to preserve your special moments for many lifetimes, but if something ever happens to yours, call us. The charges for repairs and replacements are calculated on a per job basis.
Q: We live in Oklahoma and we're traveling to Florida to get married……will you
ship our Heirloom Hourglass and accessories to our destination Wedding location in advance of our arrival?
Q: Your website says it takes 2-8 weeks plus shipping before I’ll receive my order. My Wedding is in 3 weeks and I want to have an Heirloom Hourglass, can you help me?
A: Email us with the date you need to receive your order by. We can usually accommodate most rush deadlines. Heirloom Hourglasses are handcrafted, not “off-the-shelf” items, but we will work around the clock to deliver by your Wedding or Special Occasion date if we can do it! We’ve made many dates that didn’t seem possible at first, and we want to do everything we can to make Heirloom Hourglass a part of your special day!
Q: Do you do custom work?
A: Yes, we have produced many custom Heirloom Hourglasses to our customers’ specifications. We can incorporate nearly any precious metal, gemstone, or wood species within reason…..the possibilities are limited only by your imagination and budget.
Q: Will regular beach sand from any beach flow through my Heirloom Hourglass?
A: Heirloom Hourglass is like a fine piece of furniture – you should avoid drops, dings, spills, and scratches. Simply wiping the Heirloom Hourglass down with a non-abrasive cloth from time to time will keep it shining! Avoiding long term exposure to the sun and elements will prevent discoloration and damage. Be assured that your Heirloom Hourglass is designed to last for many generations!
Q: Will the pewter or gold plating tarnish?
A: No – we coat these metals with a special protectant to ensure they will never tarnish when properly cared for.
Q: What does “properly cared for” mean?
A: It refers to basics like avoiding scratches, extended exposure to the elements, temperature extremes, and general damage. If your Heirloom Hourglass ever does get damaged – call us, we can help!
Q: How should I store and display my Heirloom Hourglass?
A: We find that most Heirloom Hourglasses get displayed in a prominent location in homes and offices. Your Heirloom Hourglass is a time capsule that will tell the story of your “Once In A Lifetime” moment, so you’ll want to display it or store it in a location where it won’t fall, get bumped into, and be susceptible to general mishaps. Tie your gift book to your Heirloom Hourglass, or place it next to your Heirloom Hourglass for display. Many people display their Heirloom Hourglass with the completed Gift Book accompanied by a gift card or photo on a mantel, end table, coffee table, desk, or shelf so that it may be shared with friends and family.
Q: What should I write in the Gift Book?
A: The Gift Book that comes with every Heirloom Hourglass is provided so that you can write whatever you feel is fitting for summarizing your “Once In A Lifetime” experience. Most try to describe the sands or soils, the place or places they are from, and any occasion that may be associated in a way that allows both you or a recipient to best enjoy the significance of your Heirloom Hourglass, and so that family members, friends, and future generations can recognize the significance of the moment and what it meant to you.
Q: Is Heirloom Hourglass a collector’s item?
A: Each Heirloom Hourglass comes with a Gift Book that includes a certificate of authenticity. Every book is numbered, and your entries make it a one of a kind. An hourglass of this quality is a highly prized possession, but the personal nature and symbolic meaning of an Heirloom Hourglass are invaluable. Further, the high quality construction and components used combined with the potentially historical significance of your hourglass make it an item that should only increase in value.
Q: If I’m buying something that is to be a family heirloom, quality is important – is Heirloom Hourglass made using high quality materials?
A: Buy with confidence – Heirloom Hourglasses are constructed from the same materials you would expect to find in today’s luxury homes or yachts. We use native wood species like cherry, hard white maple, birch, and red oak, as well as our proprietary Oceanstone material, and hand-blown glass. Our printed materials are made using acid-free, archival quality papers, and we utilize recycled and post consumer paper products and soy based inks wherever possible.
Q: Is Heirloom Hourglass safe for children?
A: We do not recommend Heirloom Hourglass or our other products for use by children. The hourglass and the collection kit consist of small and / or breakable parts that are not suitable for children.
Q: I want to fill my Heirloom Hourglass with shells, pebbles, un-screened sand, soil, and other materials….does it matter if they don’t all flow through the middle hole?
A: Part of what makes Heirloom Hourglass special is that you can fill it whenever you wish with whatever fits that you feel best represents your “Once In A Lifetime” moment. We don’t recommend filling your Heirloom Hourglass with liquids, abrasive materials, or hazardous materials, but we find that a wide variety of items can be used to fit your personality and tastes. Items that are not screened properly may not flow through the center hole, but can still be used if you desire. Heirloom Hourglass can be filled from either end, so you can fill up each side with different colors of sand, shells, seaglass, or whatever you wish!
Q: Can I use different sands and soils from multiple locations?
A: Absolutely. Some people have told us that they purchased their Heirloom Hourglass as a gift for a loved one, and filled it with sands and soils from many different places. One customer told us that she filled an Heirloom Hourglass with the following items as a Christmas gift to her Husband:
· Soil from the grounds of the new house they built
· Sands from the first beach they ever went to together
· Sands from the first cruise they ever went on together
· Soil from the grounds near the Church they were married at
· Tiny diamond shaped pebbles the couple liked to collect together
· Colored sand that matched each of their Birthstones
Q: Do you sell just the glass component of the hourglass by itself without the framework?
A: No. Our concept of a fillable hourglass is a proprietary development that is patent pending and enjoys various intellectual property rights. We vigorously pursue any infringement on these rights.
Q: What are your policies concerning the use of tree branches or other material I send you to make me an Heirloom Hourglass with?
A: Here are the guidelines and policies regarding the use of your tree branches or other materials you may send us for making your custom Heirloom Hourglass:
1) Branch Size: Branch pieces you send need to be 12 inches in length and approximately ¾ inches around. We prefer that you send 4 branch pieces, so we can select the best 3 to use.
2) Branch Type: We can use branch pieces from any tree, but they need to be in good condition – what you send is what will be used. We use branch pieces with the bark on them by default unless you indicate you want the bark removed.
3) Shipping: The customer is responsible for the shipping of branches and related costs. We are not responsible for loss or damage.
4) Hourglass bases: You can select from Oak, Maple, Cedar, Curly Maple, Curly Cherry, or Black Walnut for the bases to match with your branch pieces.
5) Price: The pricing for your complete Heirloom Hourglass is $250.00. This includes any 2 closure designs, without engraving. Shipping either way is not included. Payment must be received in full for work to commence.
6) Lead Time: Please allow additional lead time for producing custom orders – we may need to allow your branch pieces time to dry.
7) Selecting a branch to remove: Please choose a branch to remove carefully, and avoid damaging any tree. Try to select a branch that will not affect the rest of the tree if you remove it.
8) Warranty and Disclaimer: Heirloom Hourglass, LLC assumes no responsibility for material you ship us other than performance of the service specified. All sales on custom orders are final – there are no refunds of any part of the sale available for any custom order. Heirloom Hourglass, LLC expressly disclaims any liability for injuries, penalties, damage to equipment or to the tree itself, changes to the appearance of a tree that you did not expect, or other issues that may arise from your removal of tree branches from any tree. Please respect private property. We encourage all to exercise common sense so that we may always offer this unique service that is popular among our customers.
